In a quiet yet profound way, Linda McCartney has emerged as one of the
finest women photographers in the world—though there is much more to her
than that.
Raised in Scarsdale, New York, Linda studied Fine Art at the University of
Arizona, where her passion for photography began. However, it wasn’t until
she returned to New York that her self-taught photography career truly took
off while working for Town and Country magazine in the early 1960s.
A
turning point came when she seized the opportunity to photograph The Rolling
Stones on a yacht on the Hudson River, leading to an immediate demand for
her work.
Combining her love for photography with her passion for rhythm and blues,
Linda became known for capturing the essence of emerging musicians. Among
the stars she photographed were Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, The Who, Simon and
Garfunkel, Bob Dylan, Otis Redding, and The Beatles—through whom she
eventually met her husband, Paul.
Linda went on to work as a photographer for Rolling Stone magazine,
and her images of rock stars have appeared in magazines globally. Her
photography has also been exhibited in over 50 galleries worldwide,
including prominent shows at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum. She was
even voted the USA’s Female Photographer of the Year.
A
vegetarian and devoted animal lover, Linda has contributed significantly to
causes such as Lynx (the UK anti-fur lobby) and People for the Ethical
Treatment of Animals (PETA). She has also worked extensively with the
Council for the Protection of Rural England and Friends of the Earth to
raise awareness of environmental issues.
In 1989, Linda published Linda McCartney’s Home Cookery. This
vegetarian cookbook became the UK’s best-selling book on the subject and a
best-seller in the USA, with over 250,000 copies sold. Following its
success, Linda became a leading voice on vegetarianism, frequently sought
after by the media.
In the spring of 1991, Linda launched her own range of ready-made vegetarian
meals, which became an instant hit in the UK. By September 1991, over five
million of her meals had been sold, and they were even featured on the menu
at London’s iconic Hard Rock Cafe.
Beyond photography, cooking, and media appearances, Linda also played
keyboards in Paul McCartney’s band. From 1989 to 1990, they embarked on a
record-breaking world tour, performing 102 shows in 13 countries to over
three million fans.
But perhaps most importantly, Linda McCartney was a dedicated mother of
four, balancing her public achievements with her commitment to her family.
